YARD Stick One

Run scriptable sub-GHz radio experiments.

Sub-GHzUSBOpen hardware

Radio equipment needs certification where you live (FCC, CE, UKCA, ISED, Anatel). Some devices are uncertified or restricted in Brazil. Buyers are responsible for their local law.

Bring along
A computer, RfCat and a suitable antenna.
Keep in mind
Half-duplex transceiver with specific bands; not a wideband SDR.

Open hardware

YARD Stick One's full KiCad schematic/PCB are published under GPL-2.0; the rfcat host tool is the official way to drive it.

Research notes

Repo confirmed via gh api (GPL-2.0, 297 stars); full KiCad tree confirmed via git tree listing. Device ships without an enclosure (docs/source/enclosureOptions.rst just names a commercial off-the-shelf New Age Enclosures part, not a design file, so no enclosure entry listed). TI product page for CC1111F32 verified 200.

Specifications

Radio capabilities

7
Radio
TI CC1111; half-duplex digital sub-GHz transceiver
Supported bands
300–348, 391–464 and 782–928 MHz
Unofficial tuning
281–361, 378–481 and 749–962 MHz; maker experience, not official bands
Modulation
ASK, OOK, GFSK, 2-FSK, 4-FSK and MSK
Data rate
Up to 500 kbps
RF front end
Receive/transmit amplifiers; 800/900 MHz harmonic filtering
Host connection
Full-speed USB 2.0; controlled by host software

Antenna & expansion

6
Antenna socket
50 Ω SMA female; use an SMA antenna, not direct RP-SMA
Antenna supply
Software-controlled 3.3 V, maximum 50 mA
Package requirement
Antenna not included; maker suggests ANT500 as a starter
Expansion
P1 GoodFET-compatible header; pinout in board schematic
Programming pads
GIMME-compatible test points
LED behavior
LED can stay off at idle; indicates transmit/receive data activity

Client & firmware

7
Factory software
RfCat firmware and CC Bootloader preinstalled
Host tools
RfCat Python client with PyUSB/libusb; Linux access rules documented
Installation caveat
README still says Python 2.7; a current Python 3 environment is unverified here
Connection check
rfcat -r opens the interactive client; d.ping() checks communication
USB update target
Use the YS1 CC Bootloader target, not another CC1111 dongle target
Hardware recovery
P1 pins 7 and 9 trigger bootloader mode per maker FAQ
Design files
KiCad schematic and board files in the maker’s repository
What still needs checking
  • RfCat documentation contains old Python and operating-system instructions. Confirm the actual client/firmware combination before following installation steps.
  • Band, modulation and data-rate support do not establish support for every device protocol; this is not a general-purpose wideband IQ receiver.
  • Complete dimensions, weight, current consumption and a measured RF performance table were not established in this review.
